How To Measure Your Size If You Have A Belly Reddit Shirt Fitting

Hey guys, I've been measuring lots of t-shirts and trying to understand fit and how to make buying them easier. It'due south part of a hobby project I'm working on to build a tool to try to have the pain out of buying t-shirts (for those of us that information technology does cause hurting), and also facilitate some interesting posts to r/mfa. I'yard hoping to get a load more measurements and do something more interesting with the data, but at the moment I thought I'd share some of the stuff I've got and see if you guys had any suggestions for hereafter posts.

Now that lockdown has lifted, I'm going to be able to measure loads more t-shirts, merely this gives an indication of what I've measured so far:

The breast measurements of all the dress I've got measured so far.

Asket

Someone on r/mfa a few months back recommended Asket to me for t-shirts. They cost £thirty each (so 5x more expensive than my usual go-to brands of H&Thou, Uniqlo, etc.) To my dismay, Asket'southward "pocket-sized-long", size from "The T-Shirt" range was actually the best fitting t-shirt I've e'er bought, and then I had to fork out the £thirty for it.

r/malefashionadvice - T-shirt Review: Measurements and Research

Asket'due south slightly confusingly named "The T-shirt" in size "modest long" is the all-time plumbing fixtures t-shirt I've found and so far.

I'1000 not 100% on the reasons why this feels better than any of the others, but it does. I suspect it's downward to sizing and material thickness/quality. On my current means/lifestyle I sadly won't be able to fill my wardrobe with these t-shirts though, so on I go.

Thousand&S

Next I measured over a dozen differently sized Chiliad&S t-shirts (I think Grand&Due south might be an exclusively Britain brand, then apologies to everyone overseas. I had limited options during lockdown). None of them quite fit me as neatly. The all-time plumbing equipment was the "Slim Fit Pure Cotton Coiffure Neck T-Shirt" in size "s standard".

r/malefashionadvice - T-shirt Review: Measurements and Research

Yard&S Slim fit t-shirt in small. The windy weather condition of North Wales bravado some ripples around the waist.

Here's a breakdown of how some of the measurements compare to my platonic measurements:

r/malefashionadvice - T-shirt Review: Measurements and Research

(The blue icons show the measurement of the t-shirt. The green are my own ideal measurements. The fits are mostly good hither except it's slightly too long.)

One thing that did strike me with this, is the subtle, simply noticeable divergence that the arm hole opening measurement makes. I don't know if you can see in the photo how the Chiliad&Southward t-shirt seems to bunch under my armpit a bit, making it feel just a lilliputian less untidy.

r/malefashionadvice - T-shirt Review: Measurements and Research

All the measurements here match my ideal measurements closely, except for the arm hole opening.

I had a expect at a range of t-shirts that I measured (H&1000, Uniqlo, Side by side, Chiliad&S, etc). You can see that M&S (orange icons in the below graph) have waaaaay bigger armhole openings than the alternatives.

r/malefashionadvice - T-shirt Review: Measurements and Research

One thousand&S' range of t-shirts take disproportionately large arm hole openings (run across orange circles)

This strikes me equally laziness (/efficiency) on the part of whomever designed the t-shirts. They seem to accept not fabricated the right changes for different sizes. It'due south absurd to think there's anyone out there with my narrow chest, shoulder, neck, and arm lengths, only who somehow needs those extra few inches for their uniquely and massively adult shoulders/biceps.

r/malefashionadvice - T-shirt Review: Measurements and Research

As yous tin can see from the range of sizes of this particular M&Southward t-shirt, there's not much adjustment made to the arm hole opening compared to changing breast measurements.

Next

Later this I ordered a load of t-shirts from Side by side and got to piece of work measuring these:

The closest matching t-shirt from Next was their slim fit, in size medium. Most of the measurements were well-nigh perfect. Information technology was simply the waist and forepart length that let me down slightly.

r/malefashionadvice - T-shirt Review: Measurements and Research

Next slim-fit t-shirt in size "medium"

r/malefashionadvice - T-shirt Review: Measurements and Research

The waist was 4cm bigger than my ideal and the front length 3cm likewise long.

(Rant) There are two things already covered here that exercise piss me off almost the wear industry. Ane is that I never know whether I'll be a small, extra small, or a medium when I try a t-shirt on for the first time. This seems unnecessarily complicated/time-consuming for someone who doesn't particularly enjoy shopping for dress. The other is demonstrated by the Next'due south website photo for t-shirt I measured. This t-shirt is clearly being pegged at the back to tighten upward the fabric. Please wear industry, either get suitably chunky models or else make smaller t-shirts. Finish fudging your photos (and manikins!).

r/malefashionadvice - T-shirt Review: Measurements and Research

There'southward no way this guys belly is big enough to fill up out that t-shirt without information technology being held out at the dorsum.

(Terminate of Bluster)

I've been trying to create some kind of rut map to show how inconsistent sizing is, with limited success:

r/malefashionadvice - T-shirt Review: Measurements and Research

You lot can see a off-white amount of overlap between the medium sizes (pinkish/peach) and the small (dark blue) and big (teal)

Fabric

So I've never really thought about this, but in an effort to work out what it is that makes the Asket "The T-shirt" feel improve, I've started looking into it. According to Asket's "The T-Shirt" page, "our signature straight-cutting coiffure cervix T-Shirt is made from premium heavyweight Egyptian cotton wool jersey and accentuated with a ribbed neckline". So what even is Egyptian cotton? According to kingofcotton.com:

Egyptian Cotton

  • Non necessarily from Egypt

  • ...Hand picked so puts less stress on the fibres, leaving them straight and intact...and more resistant to stress.

  • ...finer threads... produce a finer and more than consistent finish, catastrophe upwardly as a softer and more flexible fabric.

  • Since finer yarns mean a higher thread count, the weave of the fabric is significantly stronger and lasts a lot longer than regular cotton.

Sounds great. Although when it comes to durability, I've got t-shirts that toll me £5 from H&Yard 5+ years ago, so I'm non too worried almost spending extra money where that's concerned. £v-six buys me aplenty immovability as far as my experience goes. The feel and appearance do make me think I'll exist looking out for Egyptian cotton more in time to come though.

Cloth Density

Out of interest, I also looked at the weight/density of each t-shirt:

r/malefashionadvice - T-shirt Review: Measurements and Research

The material of the M&S t-shirt was noticeably thinner than the Adjacent and Asket t-shirts.

I thought it was interesting that Next and Asket had identical densities. I've never owned t-shirts from either earlier so tin't yet comment on the durability. Next don't become into any more detail than "100% cotton" on their website so assume at £half dozen/t-shirt that it's a very basic quality.

Sustainability

According to an article on oecotextiles.blog, there are 5.9kg CO2 emitted per tonne of conventional cotton weave produced. I've worked out that the Next t-shirt had 8g of textile that I didn't need (besides big around the waist, etc). That works out at 0.75g of CO2 omitted through unnecessary fabric. Similarly, it's estimated that ten,000L of water go into each kg of cotton, so this works out at well-nigh 80L of unnecessary water consumed.

Sustainability is such a complicated topic and I'k many hours/books/documentaries abroad from feeling like I take any kind of grasp on it. I'd be interested to hear anyone else'south opinions/understanding here.

Summary

So I decided to buy ane of each of the brands I measured. I figured that since I'd gone to all the trouble information technology would be interesting to compare how they perform over the side by side few years. I'one thousand interested to see what I tin find between the £half-dozen and £thirty bracket. If anyone has any suggestions I'd be actually grateful to hear them!

Asket go to an impressive of trouble to explain their sustainability for their apparel. It makes me experience a lilliputian guilty, that I should maybe be looking to budget more for wearing apparel - merely this is probably 1 for Time to come, Older/Richer Jimmy.

Help!

I don't know a corking deal most clothes or the industry. I'm basically taking any suggestions from r/mfa and hoping to locate any recommended shops in the UK. So yeah, please share anything you think might be relevant to finding/ownership t-shirts.

The tool I've spent the last few months working on is basically me trying to find a way for everyone to benefit from other people's efforts/research. I figure if I go out and measure a load of t-shirts in that location should be a way for other people on r/mfa of my size to benefit from all of the measuring/testing I've done. I'd be delighted if y'all could cheque it out and tell me what you think. (It'd be super validating and appreciated if anyone else wanted to become involved with the measuring/developing side of it).
